Recalculating

As I got into my car, preparing to make yet another journey upstate to inspect some land for sale, I entered my first destination into the GPS mounted on my dashboard and was on my way. Not long into the trip, I got distracted, as we all sometimes do and I missed my exit. Just as I realized my mistake, my GPS, who I call Jill, made a very profound announcement, she said ‘RECALCULATING’. Interesting. She didn’t say turn around and go home, you made a mistake. She said, ‘Recalculating’. In essence, what she was saying is that you made a mistake and let’s see how we can fix it and find the best way to get you to your destination.

I believe that there is a valuable lesson to be learned here. There are no direct paths to success. The journey will have many detours and bumps in the road. Successful people do not encounter less obstacles, they just find ways around them and continue on their way. They refuse to quit, when others less committed have long since gone home.

I have tried to break into real estate business for many years, buying books, training materials and scouring the web for that one niche that would be the key to my success. With each particular method, I would read, research and prepare but never fully commit because I always felt like there was more to know. I wasn’t the expert that I wanted to be so I never made that leap. Life has a funny way slipping by, you go to sleep in your twenties thinking that you have all the time in the world to stake your claim in life and you wake up in your fifties and saying where did all that time go?

The point that I’m trying to make is that if you wait for everything to be perfect before you take that leap, you will never leave the comfort of your own couch. They say that a plane flying cross country is off course 90% of the time. The pilot continually corrects his course to arrive at his ultimate destination. We too must make constant adjustments to stay on course. Remember life favors the bold, so be bold and follow whatever it is that you are passionate about. To quote Tony Robbins (again), ‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get, what you’ve always got.
