Upstate New York Town Wants Local Muslims to Dig Up Their Cemetery

The Town of Sydney in upstate NY is trying to is to force a local Muslim religious community to dig up a small cemetery on its property and never bury anyone there again because it says it’s illegal. Siting liability issues, Town Supevisor Bob McCarthy is asking the group to remove the bodies and to not bury any more.
The problem is that there are no laws in Sydney or New York state, for that matter, covering cemeteries on private land and in 2005 the town approved the cemetery. That being said, the town may try for a court order to force the Muslims to dig up the graves, based on a New York law against cemeteries on mortgaged land which covers the Muslim site.
Some have pointed to a religious bias angle, in part because the town board took its stance in July, just as the so-called Terror Mosque controversy was making headlines.
